The Belvedere is not only a magnificent Baroque palace but also houses one of Austria's most valuable art collections – with works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. With millions of visitors passing through every year the museum had to re-think the visitor experience for reopening safely after COVID-19 building closures.
The remobilisation of a museum is a huge task and requires a rethinking of the visitor experience that once was. With social distancing regulations in place, staff at the Belvedere opted to remove their traditional audio guide devices in favour of a BYOD (bring your own device) model whereby audiences use their own smartphones to access information before, during and after a visit. After a competitive process Smartify was selected as the best BYOD software provider and was asked to complete the data transfer and set-up in just two weeks...😅!
Our solution: The best data integration team in the business (we like to think!) got to work uploading all collection items that were On Display. For Copyright works we used the helpful Smartify copyright icon to ensure visitors would still be able to scan and identify collection items but not view a thumbnail image in the app.
Once the collection was live we set-up a geolocation venue take-over so that visitors on-site would be prompted to ‘Check-In’ for a custom experience viewing only content from the Belevdere to aid their visit.
In the context of COVID-19, it was more important than ever to build visitor and staff confidence. We also needed to work offer a low-cost solution and one that could be set-up at record speed.
